Description: This new Merrimack River ride heads out on Newburyport's elegant High Street, Maudslay State Park and crosses the Upper Artichoke Lake before doing several scenic miles right along the river. The short ride turns back on some of our favorite roads, while the medium and long rides follow the river to Groveland, cross there and following the north side of the river, arriving back in Newburyport on the Rt. 1 bridge. The long route continues on Rt. 1A to Rowley, then returns on Central St., a nice stretch of Rt. 1 and other local roads to Cushing Park. Very scenic views, riding right along both sides of the Merrimack River. This year's ride has been redesigned for a minimum of turns.
Please use extra caution especially at the following places:
Groveland Bridge: if the traffic is heavy, we suggest walking the bike on the pedestrian walkway.
Rt. 110 at Mudnock Rd.: This is a very dangerous crossing with four lanes, fast traffic and no traffic light.
Eastern Marsh Trail: Please ride mindfully near pedestrians and children.
Rt. 1 in Rowley: This short stretch has wide shoulders except near the blinking light for the turn to the Governors Academy.
Route arrow: This ride is arrowed with a white circle and line, updated for 2012.
