Participants at NSC rides must obey Massachusetts Bicycle Law and NSC Biking Courtesy Guidelines

  • All participants in NSC rides must wear a helmet and must either be an NSC member or sign a liability waiver.
  • Cyclists have the right to use all Massachusetts public ways except limited access or express state highways and where signs specifically prohibit bicycles.
  • Cyclists shall be subject to the traffic laws and regulations of Massachusetts. This includes stopping at stop signs, traffic signals, and when approaching school buses with flashing lights.
  • Cyclists must signal turns, but such signals shall not be required to be made continuously nor when the use of both hands is necessary for the safe operation of the bicycle.
  • Bicyclists may ride 2 abreast sharing a single lane but must facilitate traffic. Move to single file when cars approach from the rear. Whether riding single-file or side by side, keep group size small (4 to 6 long at most) and leave gaps between groups. We encourage our members to ride single file at all times.
  • Cyclists may ride to the right of vehicular traffic, either on the road or on the shoulder.
  • Cyclists are required to give their name and address to a police officer who observes a traffic law violation. Violations of any of these laws can be punished by a fine of up to $20. The violation shall not affect the status of the bicyclist’s license to operate a motor vehicle or status in the safe driver insurance plan. You must notify the police of any accident involving personal injury or property damage over $100.
  • Bicycles may be ridden on sidewalks outside business areas unless prohibited by local ordinance.
  • Cyclists must yield the right of way to pedestrians and give an audible signal before overtaking pedestrians.
  • NSC rides shall not be arrowed in towns prohibiting such arrowing, including but not limited to Boxford and Middleton.
  • As of 4/1/23 there is a new 4' passing law for drivers and a legal requirement for cyclists to use front and rear lights after sunset. See the MA Vulnerable Road Users Laws.
